Comeback Daniil Medvedev Secures First Trophy in Over Two Years

Nineteen of Daniil Medvedev's twenty-one victories have been earned on hard surfaces

A comeback Daniil Medvedev claimed his initial trophy for over two years with victory over Frenchman Moutet in the tournament championship match.

The Russian, a ex- number one, has endured a difficult period, achieving just a single victory at the Grand Slams and suffering a setback at the New York tournament.

Medvedev's varied form on the ATP Tour - and struggles with his serve in particular - caused him exiting of the elite rankings and ultimately separating with long-time mentor his previous coach.

Currently training with Johansson and Rohan Goetzke, he has steadily advanced in the past month - climaxing in a tightly fought three-set triumph over Frenchman Moutet.

It is Medvedev's initial trophy following the 2023 Rome Masters and first on a hard surface since that period of that year.

Success also indicates Medvedev has secured twenty-one titles at twenty-one different competitions.

"It's the first time I have attended a competition with my both daughters together, so to secure a trophy is particularly special," stated ranked player the champion.

"This victory is in honour of my younger daughter my daughter, because the first title I achieved when my older daughter Alisa was born was for her."

The tennis star, the former major winner, had lost his previous six championship matches, featuring in the German tournament previously this season.

The player's counter-punching play style and recurring emotional displays on the tennis court had caused commentators to doubt if his skill to compete at the top level was over.

But the 29-year-old has implemented adjustments in the last few weeks, attempting to come to the net and perform aggressively, reinforced by an enhanced serve.

He fought back from a disadvantage in the first set against the tricky opponent, winning four of the last five points to gain the advantage.

Both players swapped break points in the following set before the Frenchman, striving for his initial tour title, took control to force a decider.

The opponent rescued 4 early-game opportunities in a tight deciding set before the Russian won the break to fifteen to serve for the match.

Appropriately, the winner secured the title with a point at the net, with Moutet failing to manage a volley after two hours and 38 minutes.
