A defense minister has revealed that the Ministry of Defence is currently examining the possible security risks posed by Chinese-made vehicles, and personnel have been instructed to avoid discussing classified matters in all cars.
Safety Advice for MoD Personnel
During a recent interview on LBC, Luke Pollard addressed reports that Ministry of Defence officials have been told not to talk about secret material while travelling in Chinese vehicles.
He stated that the ministry is “investigating” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, but stressed that security is a concern in all modern cars.
Our department has a fleet of thousands of vehicles in the Ministry of Defence and Chinese ones represent a very small number.
However whether you’re driving a vehicle from China or a non-Chinese car, our instruction to our staff is to avoid connecting MoD technology into their vehicle, not to have conversations at a classified level in any vehicle, due to the increasing threats of eavesdropping that exist in every single automobile, to restrict those confidential talks in protected areas. This is a wise and sensible thing for anyone worried about safety.
When it was suggested that it would be wise for the MoD to stop using every cars from China, the minister replied: ‘That’s precisely what we’re investigating at the present time.”
Broader Security Context
The announcement follows reports from Norway and Denmark have warned the United Kingdom to the presence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese buses, which could allow China to disable public transport and bring disruption to transport systems.
Additionally, a Russian spy ship has been directing laser beams at Royal Air Force pilots, described as a “highly dangerous” act by government representatives.
This broader defence situation highlights the significance of strong measures and vigilance in all areas of official activities, including vehicle use to discussions habits.
