Once-a-Day Slimming Pill May Help Reduce Body Weight by 20%, Study Reveals

An everyday weight loss pill may help individuals reduce their body weight by as much as a fifth, according to a study that could open doors for countless people more individuals to lose weight.

How the Drug Works

The drug, known as the oral treatment, focuses on the identical gut hormone pathways as slimming shots such as Mounjaro and semaglutide. In a trial of over 3,000 participants, one in five users who took the once-a-day pill for more than a year lost at least one-fifth of their total weight.

Weight loss injections have been transformative, but pill versions represent a major breakthrough because they are easier to store, share and administer, and may also be projected to be more affordable, offering new optimism for millions attempting to lose weight.

The medication is a GLP-1 agonist, a type of medication that helps reducing blood sugar readings, slows the breakdown of food and can reduce appetite.

Trial Findings and Accessibility

The weight loss seen among participants using the tablet is not as dramatic as that in users using tirzepatide, but specialists think the tablet will be easier to obtain and convenient than shots.

The drug is not yet authorized by the US Food and Drug Administration or regulators in other countries. Developers has said it expects significant interest once the new pill is launched.

During the trial, the 3,127 patients were split into cohorts taking orforglipron tablets of different strengths, while others received a placebo, for 72 weeks.

Each of the volunteers were diagnosed with excess weight, indicating they had a body mass index reading of 30 or higher, but they did not have diabetes. Patients from several countries took part in the research.

Key Outcomes

Researchers found that after the study period people on the smallest amount lost an average of 7.5% of their weight. Those on the highest dose lost an average of 11.2% of their weight.

Among patients taking the highest doses, 54.6% had a reduction of at least 10% of body weight, 36% had a reduction of 15% or greater, and 18.4% had a drop of 20% or more.

Researchers reported other health metrics additionally improved among people using the drug, including improved BP, a reduced waist size and a reduction in LDL levels.

The most common adverse reactions were stomach-related, which were described as manageable.

“Among participants with obesity, 72-week use with the medication resulted in notable decreases in body weight than placebo,” the authors wrote.

Potential Benefits

Health experts have hailed weight loss drugs as game-changing. But shots come with extra work for medical systems, so oral options might benefit millions more people trying to lose weight.

Separate research shows slimming jabs could be successful on children as young as age six who have obesity or are diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. However, digestive issues were “significantly more common” among children taking the medications.
