R&B Christmas Ball Review: A Heartfelt Trip Returning to the Nineties
The second annual Rhythm and Blues Christmas Concert showcased a lineup of performers renowned for their holiday albums. Instead of focusing on carols, the evening acted as a nostalgic reason for a trip back to the earnest and emotional sound of 1990s R&B.
Starting Acts: Classic Vibes
Dru Hill delivered classic R&B in matching outfits, with videos from the 2000s displaying behind them. Following this, a performance of mostly ballads from the artist Joe set the stage for the headlining artists.
Toni Braxton's Powerful Set
The opening of Burna Boy’s Last Last skillfully segued into He Wasn’t Man Enough, tying in Braxton's artistic heritage. At first, her show with a live band seemed anchored in the era of her peak fame.
However, nine songs into her set, she spoke about her battles with lupus and being told she might never sing on stage again. Performing Breathe Again in a solitary beam of light, she delivered a deeply heartfelt moment. “As long as I live, I will never forget tonight,” she stated sincerely.
Driving guitar chords then launched the crowd into Long As I Live, cementing her grip over the audience's emotions. She finished with an flawless, though somewhat abridged, version of her signature hit, Un-break My Heart.
Boyz II Men: Vocal Masters
Appearing on stage in dazzlingly matching white suits, Boyz II Men opened with Motownphilly. They performed classics like Water Runs Dry and On Bended Knee, demonstrating breathtaking three-way vocals that were both tight and responsive to their accompaniment.
Their performance included covers of inspirations, including a standout guitar piece on Purple Rain, and songs influenced by them, like Bruno Mars’s Locked Out of Heaven.
A Touch of Holiday Cheer
Finally, the evening turned to the holiday mood with performances of Silent Night and Let It Snow. The performance concluded with a powerful closing run of hits including One Sweet Day, I’ll Make Love To You, and End of the Road.
Overall Thoughts
Although the evening's production had some hiccups, and the feeling at points was of stars performing a tribute to their past selves, the net effect was transportive. The audience was temporarily transported to the golden age of R&B, going home sprinkled with glitter rather than frost.
