Tetris Didn't Win at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification May Address This Issue

Each time a significant prize-giving event nears, there’s always a clamor for introducing of new categories to honor overlooked contributions and delight the passions of fans with niche passions.

My colleague made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. So would tabletop games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward because like all single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request remains most pressing above others. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

Categorizing Game Types

Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and inevitably spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason movie academies avoid this approach. However, it represents an essential concession within the realm of video games, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these six categories effectively encompass a lot of ground, allowing placement for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Think about these this year’s best games, all very different: building puzzles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games published annually without proper recognition at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition in any category during that awards season
  • Another creative title was excluded during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked that year
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers scraped into independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often compact experiences, but the art behind logic titles is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most popular titles worldwide and have been for many years.

The famous puzzle experience challenges popular creative games for the title of highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. You could fill multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these are games that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Logic title developers are working at the challenging frontier of video game design, creating some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
