Around 50 cars have been marked with what appears to be human blood in the German town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Vehicles, exterior walls and mailboxes were marked, sometimes with swastikas, they announced in a official communication.
Police state they were alerted during the night on Wednesday night, when a individual noticed that a automobile in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish substance.
The substance had been applied in the shape of a banned symbol, they reported.
Officers then found numerous other marked automobiles and house walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under laws outlawing the visible presentation of symbols from the Nazi era.
Law enforcement report initial examinations show the liquid was probably human blood.
"Currently there is no lead as to its origin; officials are currently not aware of any harm in association with the occurrence," they stated.
Local authorities announced they were working "to resolve the mystery" and have asked to the public for tips.
A high-ranking representative commented the vandalism rendered him speechless and required to be addressed rapidly.
"This incident strikes at the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the far-right violent incident in 2020," he wrote on a platform, referring to the killing of nine victims by a assailant aiming at people of foreign heritage in February 2020.
