Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge System in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in implementing video review systems.

Video review systems will make its debut at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors are granted the option to challenge certain calls made by the official, following the practice already in operation at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step arrives only a year after the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to re-examine other situations, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball touched an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Possible hindrance end of a rally.

Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a competitor can request.

A Recent Example

A recent incident occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire viewed a video and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further change at The Championships this year will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where fans have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was in or out.

In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
