Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opening batter Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements made by skipper Ben Stokes about the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made this message in multiple conversations in the wake of his team's loss in the second Ashes versus the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat with a match to spare, the captain stated he had let his sentiment to "drift around" within the squad.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

But, following Crawley made 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to his side were beaten in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The team afterwards took a holiday to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before this match, Stokes revealed his team had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the messaging from the captain and coach McCullum had remained in line with their previous three years in leadership.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," noted Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with great liberty. We believed we could do something special going into this game."

Australia Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant the chasing side 207-6 chasing a daunting target of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team require four wickets on the final day to secure an unassailable 3-0 lead with three Tests.

A loss will extend the English team's drought in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes series loss.

This series will be completed in only eleven days of cricket – with England fell the first two Tests in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"It's been difficult. They're a very, very good side. It was inevitably hard coming here to face them. They were the front-runners and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

While Crawley's innings in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his immediate future in the England team, Pope looks under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 in the team's second knock on Saturday, adding to his poor record against Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a fifty and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and returned a lower average.

However, Crawley said any notion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is talk from the outside. There is no discussion of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," he concluded.
